Younger Chemists Committee Adopt-a-School Program

Ever feel the desire to stack jello cubes? Ever wonder how many pennies you can stack on a piece of cardboard? Looking for an excuse to get out your old toys and play with a kid who has a great desire to learn about science?

Ever wish you had picked teaching as a career?

Wish no more. Volunteers are needed to help teach or assist a 4th-grade science class one hour per month in either a city or suburban school. No prior experience is necessary. An interest in science and a desire to share that interest with someone else is all that is needed. The program is structured around the WonderScience magazine published by the ACS. A team of two teachers/assistants supports one class per month. The experiments are designed with 4th-graders in mind and are well-explained. Typically, the materials used to demonstrate the concepts are simple items from around the home. There is also an informal monthly meeting to discuss lesson plans, develop materials for the class, and to share a common interest in science.

If you have an interest in the ACS 4th-grade Adopt-a-School science program, or simply need some help structuring a lesson plan for your child's class, please join our group of volunteers. The schools we are currently supporting are listed below. The Younger Chemists Committee is also sponsoring their own school, School #12 in the city near the University of Rochester. Katie Seifert Leach and Lisa Carlson are leading the program.
